About expectations: I don’t like’m. Expectations means there will be dissappointments. But I’ll give it a try. The First: I expect strange looks for my weird Thai and lots of questions about my background. I can decently speak Thai, have an Asian-looking face but because I can speak English well I expect the puzzled looks. The Second: I expect to be corrected on mistakes I make in the Thai language, because while I can decently communicate I don’t know Thai in the same nuanced manner that I know English because I have had much more contact with formal, informal, business, etc. kinds of English. The Third: I expect to be wrong and or ignorant about any aspect of Thai culture I thought I knew well. Such as, yes sure one could say that Thailand is influenced by India and China (being in ‘IndoChina!’), but to be exact, it’s more like India and China. (I have some ‘Chinese’ background and my general knowledge is that there is no limit of places of the Chinese diaspora, so.)
I’m not too fond of goals either because I have too many of them cluttering my brain. The First: learn to read and write Thai. I would like to be able to read Thai at the same recognition speed and precision as I can in English. The Second: learn to speak Thai with the correct syntax of the language. I speak with the word order of English.
There we go. I actually don’t like writing as the urge comes and goes. And I am a huge complainer but I’ll do my best to keep most of it out. Really really. This is, after all, a journal. [Think technical.]
